How to restore grout
How do I restore grout?
Restoring grout can be achieved in many different ways, but the trick is to find the method that best suits your situation.
One option is to remove the grout completely by using the Grout Grabber tool as shown in the photo to the right. Grout Grabber is a tool designed for use with a reciprocating saw to remove grout in wall or floor tiles. Complete grout removal also provides an opportunity to change the color of the grout.
Alternatively, you could clean the surface with a hand tile grout saw, which basically removes the top surface of the grout. You have to be more
careful working in wall grout so you don't remove too much grout.
Whichever method you select, it's important to protect the bottom of the tub as grout and tile particles could scratch the tub's surface.
The photo to the left shows a carbide replaceable-blade hand-held tile grout saw by Superior that can be purchased at local home centers.
Working in small areas, begin by cleaning vertical grout lines first, followed by the horizontal lines. Take care at the line intersections to make sure that the surface is smooth and flat.
Now, take a careful look at your tile, assess the situation, and decide which direction you think would be best for you. I suggest that if you want to remove the grout completely in order to regrout, then you want to use
use Grout Grabber. If you want to get back to the original grout surface or repair a grout line, then use a hand-held tile grout saw.
