Keeping tile grout looking new
We bought our home new and have been in it for some time. I notice that the tile grout in our bathroom shower has become discolored and is generally unattractive. We are planning to have the tile redone but want to know how we can keep our new tile grout looking new.
Properly installed and maintained, ceramic tile and grout can provide attractive service for many years. To maintain that beautiful like-new appearance, you'll need to do some work following the installation of your new tile, but that work will pay off in years to come.
The basic solution is to apply a sealer over the grout. Two basic types of sealers are available: a topical sealer that yields a "wet" look and a penetrating sealer with a more natural look. The latter will protect the grout but not change its appearance.
Depending on the product, sealers provide varying degrees of protection against dirt and stains so be sure to read product labels as you select a sealer and then follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Look specifically for warranties and protection information on the label.
Before you begin, allow your newly-installed grout to cure. In my own bathroom, I waited 72 hours and then applied two coats of liquid silicone sealer, allowing the sealer to dry for 24 hours between the coats.
In general, the best approach is to apply the sealer only to the grout joints and to buff off any excess from the tiles. If you prefer, you can also apply sealant over the entire surface with a sponge or cloth but you will then need to buff off any excess from the tiles with a terry cloth or cheesecloth rag.
Allow the sealant to thoroughly dry before applying caulk to the tub and wall's inside corners. Then allow everything to cure for 72 hours before using the shower.
Finally, when you start using the shower, get into the habit of wiping down the walls and fixtures after each shower using both a squeegee and chamois. That simple step will go a long way toward helping your new tile and grout retain their original beauty.
